Born in 1920, Harry was the third youngest in a family of ten children. His biography takes us back to his earliest memories in 1925. From his first encounter with a priest, aboriginals and to defending himself with his fists, Harry learnt early in life to set his own rules.
In 1935, aged fourteen, he left school to get orders and deliver sandwiches for a shop in Barrack Street, Perth. Then he moved on to the very respectable job of messenger boy for the Post Master General's Department. Many occupations and adventures followed.
During World War Two, Harry was a soldier. He recounts living in tents in the Middle East and being locked in a prison cell aboard the Orcades before his court martial. Wounded in Batavia (Jakarta) he was aboard the last ship to sail from the north side of the island before the Japanese took total control of the area.
Married in 1945, Lorna and Harry saved every penny they could to bet on one race. Harry trained in secret, with Lorna as his manager, to win the Collie Lowry Memorial Bike Race. Every penny they had was placed with the bookmakers on the morning of the race.
In 1949, Harry and Bill Newbold became partners in catching crayfish out from the Abrolhos Islands. Their adventure is one of the truly great stories about our early crayfishing industry … and we're not even half way through the book! What happened to the love story that has lasted a lifetime?
How did a father and daughter work together to write TRUTHTELLERS?
How did they answer the question, "Grandad, is God real …. or not?"
Sorry. I guess you'll just have to read the book!
